CONVULSION OF THE TRILLION TENTACLES Leicester University, England, July 24th-26th 1992. One last plug for this one-off convention in the UK before it's too late. For RuneQuesters it is going to be the event not to be missed. The guests of honour are Greg Stafford, Sandy Petersen and Ken Rolston - all available to be interrogated by fanatical Gloranthaphiles. Other Gloranthaphiles of ill-repute in attendance are, Oliver Dickinson, Dave Morris, Jon Quaife, Mr. Gloranthan Insighter '91, and various international parts of the "Tales of the Reaching Moon" monolith. What events have we got planned? Well, biggest and best is our Gloranthan freeform game set in Lunar occupied Boldhome at a time of great unrest. A freefrom game is a sort of Live action game, but with very simple rules, detailed character motivation and lots of role-play. As part of the freeform information pack there will be a special Boldhome book with maps, a new essay on the city by Greg Stafford, and various other essays on local history and politics. This is only available at the convention. Then we've got a Gloranthan panel where we line up the guests to answer purely Gloranthan questions - no rules! Ever wondered what NeverStarve biscuits are? Just ask! Ken Rolston will be doing his Avalon Hill and RuneQuest talk, with support from Sandy Petersen. This is your chance to ask all those sorcery rules questions. Other RuneQuest events will include The Griselda Experience, numerous games (Ken will be running one or two and Sandy may run Dorastor for the foolish amongst you), and the traditional Eat at Geo's Party (more POWSIE anyone?). Lastly, the auction may interest some of you. The real goodies include The Gloranthan Encyclopedia, The RQ Movie Script, Mega-notes on Sandy Petersen's world-spanning Gloranthan campaign, and Lucky dip packages including fragments of Harmast Saga, Orlanthi myths and Glorantha: The Game. More mainstream RQ stuff includes: Nomad Gods; White Bear and Red Moon 1st Edition; RuneQuest 1st Edition; Original copies of Wyrms Footnotes 1, 2, 5, 6, & 8 to14; Cults of Prax; Cults of Terror; Griffin Mountain; Borderlands; Big Rubble; RQ2 Trollpak; Foes; Balastor's Barracks; and Tales of the Reaching Moon 1-6. We have two or more copies of many of the above. Other stuff: There will be three tournaments, Stormbringer, Call of Cthulhu and Pendragon. Also, there is a big Tekumel lobby, so a number of games of this are planned. Otherwise, there is plenty of room for you to play your own games, either organised through the committee or off-the-cuff. The convention itself is a small, residential, relaxed, with only 150 people attending. At the last count I saw (April) there were 30 or 40 places left, though space on the freeform game was limited. Membership costs #15 for a resident and #20 for a non- resident at the convention. Room costs are #15 per night, breakfast included. (# = Pounds Sterling). There is a fully licensed bar at the convention, with various delightful warm English beers, delicious Olde English Cider, crass cold lagers from Australia and Germany, and spirits and other stuff for the wimps. For details of the convention send post haste a self-addressed envelope with two or three International Reply Coupons (just ask for 'em at your local Post Office) to: Convulsion '92 8 Birkbeck Road Ealing London W5 4ES ENGLAND Ask Steve for a copy of PR2, the freeform registration form, and anything else he'd care to send you. Tell him Dave sent you. Good Luck. I hope to see you there! -------------------- From: "Roderick Robertson, SC1-5, x52936" Date: Mon, 15 Jun 1992 12:54 PST Subject: Review of Sun County Sun County Review $19.00 Avalon Hill 128 pages, maps on front & back covers. Michael O'Brian and others This is the first RQ Product under Ken Rolston's editorial tenure, and it's a goody. It has the feel of vintage Chaosium material, and builds on a lot of now out-of-print modules, specifically Pavis, Big Rubble and Borderlands. I don't know if AH is planning on re-releasing the modules for 3rd (or 4th edition), so if you don't already have them, start looking in flea markets, garage sales, etc. The first 20 or so pages introduce Sun County in Prax, south of Pavis on the river of Cradles. Also introduced are important figures in this Theocracy (The cult of Yelmalio runs the County for most intents and Purposes), and some words about the surrounding regions. The next twenty-odd pages cover the Religious and Military side of things, there is a Cult write up of Yelmalio in the style of Cults of Prax (updated to fit the 3rd ed. rules). A description of the Sun Dome Temple is included, including magical defenses, followed by descriptions of the Sun Dome Templars and the militia. A short write-up of a new Gloranthan game, Shield Push is included, but the mechanics of the Game are left up to the GM (Mike, do you have the rules? or should we just make them up?). Now we have another game to play besides Troll Ball. There are eight pages of scenes and encounters before the main scenario section. Some GM hints are included as to the severity of the scenarios, and sample characters are included for a Yelmalian party. a number of player handouts are included, to both spur the players and to provide important information about Sun County. The first scenario introduces an annual event, the Garhound Contest, which actually takes place outside the County (just outside), allowing Non-Yelmalian PC's to meet and interact with the religiously strict Yelmalians on neutral ground, or for Yelmalians to meet the lewd and lascivious Orlanthi and Lunars. Seven contests take place during the games, and mechanics and rules are included for all events. A specific year's contest is presented, with Lunar intrigue, Home-town patriotism, and mysterious murders. Numerous Scenario hooks are included to appeal to most any party, Orlanthi, Praxian, Lunar or Solar. Rabbit Hat Farm is a treasure hunt in an abandoned hamlet, and is recommended for new PC's and GM's. It is pretty linear in presentation, and reminded me of the, old Snake-Pipe Hollow. If the characters manage to get all the way through the scenario, they can acquire a plot of land and some responsibility in Sun County (If of the appropriate cult affiliations of course. The last two scenarios, Old Sun Dome and Solinthor's Tower are linked together in a nebulous fashion, with clues from Old Sun Dome pointing to Solinthor's Tower. In each case, the characters face old and deadly opponents. Overall, the module was well presented. The Illustrations were nice for the most part (the cover by Roger Raupp caught my eye as I walked into the store), though some of the interior illos were not to my taste. The text is broken up with illustrations, boxed commentary, and supplemental material. Character statistics are presented with outlines appropriate to the creature in question. In all, this is a quantum step ahead of the drek AH last foisted off on us (El Darad and Daughters of Darkness). The artwork, stories and supplemental material not to mention that it's the first new Gloranthan material since Elder secrets, and the first Gloranthan Scenarios since 2nd edition, make this a welcome addition to the Rune Quest line. For the first time since 3rd edition came out, I feel that AH is trying to live up to the standards set by Greg Stafford and Chaosium. Well done Michael, I'm impressed (Now, where are those Shield Push rules?) Roderick Robertson Robertson@Delphi.Intel.Com -------------------- From: dogwood!warren@gatech.edu (Warren E. Taylor) Date: Fri, 19 Jun 1992 16:35:54 -0400 Subject: A RuneQuestion I know I've probably asked this before, but I'm looking for a copy of the pre-Avalon Hill RuneQuest. A photocopy would do, I guess. [Beware, it still falls under Chaosium's copyright - HL] I used to play RQ. I had RQII at one time and eventually it got ruined. I quit playing it. A while later I bought the Avalon Hill version but I've not been too happy with it. I seem to remember better quality in the older version. I want to teach this game and world to my group of 10, and I'd like to use some of the older stuff if possible. Is there any hope of this?
