Editorial:

This issue contains a number of short items, following up on past
issues of the digest. The next issue will follow shortly, with
several people's ideas on starting new campaigns.

I've seen announcements of new RQ materials coming from
Avalon Hill. I'd appreciate if someone can confirm what we can
expect. Last week saw the publication of King of Sartar, the
announcement of which is included by David Gadbois.

As the stories go, the Chaosium house campaign put their "Sanctuary"
in the Holy Country/Kethaela.

Rankan Empire = Lunars
Beysibs = Waertagi

Indeed, an extremely interesting article by David Cheng. I'd been
thinking about the same question, from the other direction: should DI
chance be related to RM points? (In some unspecified way.) In
particular, Rune Priests get a pretty raw DI deal at the moment, while
admittedly RQII RP DI(*) was fairly abuse-worthy. Incidently, does
anyone have a handy rationale as to which "Rune Lords" get 1d10 DI?
Note that this is not identical, by any means, to the list of Rune Lord
ranks in GoG, and seems a little suspicious in places. (Examples escape
me, at the moment.)

On an orthogonal note, does anyone have a source for sea gods, in
particular the geneaology thereof, besides GoG? (Which is surprisingly
helpful for this pantheon.) There are a few gaps, which if no-one has
any specific sources for, I'll be prepared to post, complete with my
own wild guesses for you all to laugh at.

Alex.

Subject: Troll pak

I have at last last bought Troll Gods and Elder Secrets, all inspired by
Sun County. I already have RQ2 Trollpak but only in a photocopy so I though
I'd invest the bolgs in th new 'un.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

When people said that the illos were bad I didn't realise they were so
awful as to make you sick. I mean the Dark Elves in Troll Gods make me
vomit and as for the Kyger Litor illo URGH!

Why on earth did Chaosium allow AH to do this? They had all the original
illos from the old days, or the excellent artists in Gloranthan Bestiary
so WHY WHY WHY WHY?

Now, is Troll Pak for RQ3 as dire as Troll Gods or is it nicely
illustrated? I don't think I can stand it if it's crap so please let me
know whether to buy it or not.

I have Troll Realms and Haunted Ruins which are okay so I could live
without Troll Pak if it's foul.

May Zorak Zoran smite Dobyski dead.........

[Editor: Read my previous review of Troll Gods and Troll Pak in Digest
volume 5, issue 3. As you already have the RQ2 version of Trollpak,
you can save the money. Together with Troll Gods, Elder Secrets and
Troll Realms and Haunted Ruins you've got every bit of information
that's in the AH Troll Pack.]

Subject: King of Sartar

I recently received a flier about the book "King of Sartar," the book
which describes the exploits of Prince Argrath and the end of the Third
Age of Glorantha. Here is the text from it: [all typos are mine]

Greg Stafford
King of Sartar

Dragon Pass.

A land where miles-long dragons sleep for centuries, while cities are
built upon their backs.

Where the tide of the Red Moon sweeps down from the North, devouring the
forces of earth and wind.

And where you can discover the true secret of Argrath, a hero who made a
difference.

Gloranthan Fiction. From Chaosium.

King of Sartar is historical fiction set in the fantasy world of
Glorantha. Six Gloranthan scholars reveal their perspectives on the
facts, history, and secrets of Prince Argrath's heroic struggle against
the invading Lunar Empire. Gloranthan mysteries are revealed here that
have never appeared in print before.

Perfect-bound and consisting of 300 pages in a 5x8" format, KING OF
SARTAR builds upon details and background originally published in
Chaosium's memorable RuneQuest supplements and currently in Avalon
Hill's Gloranthan games releases, while providing a tremendous amount of
depth and detail. It caters to a built-in audience that we have
developed for nearly 20 years.

they were expecting their first print run of King of Sartar last week.
I hope to get a copy soon. I'd appreciate other people's reviews.]

If your are looking for RuneQuest miniatures, call Chessex (in
Berkeley, CA). They have over 80 different figures: adventurers,
ducks, trollkin, baboons, broos... Prices range from $0.50 to
$1.00. A steal! The phone number is (510) 843-1194. These "Trollkin
Forge" figures were produced by Citadel. I have purchased quite a few
at a conference, and am happy with them.

Subject: Question: Errata for RQ ?

I hear of an errata sheet for RQ, but where do I get one from and how
many are there. Does anyone have one and what do they say?

[Editor: A list of errata was maintained for RQ2 by Chaosium.
The Games Workshop edition (of '81, '82 ?) had them printed on the
inside covers. Oliver Dickinson once printed a couple of RQ3 errata
in his RuneRites in the late White Dwarf.]

Subject: Sun County review

Sun County
This is the latest RQ supplement to be produced by Avalon Hill and is the
best since the Glorantha boxed set, indeed in many ways better.

A softback with 128 pages it details the Yelmalio culture of Sun County
in Prax in Glorantha. It includes articles on Yelmalio culture, their
relations with their Pavic and Lunar neighbours, typical militia units,
encounters for Sun County and four excellent scenarios.

Firstly the format is so much better than the previous boxed sets. This
is like the old RQ2 stuff, nicely put together. It is beautifully
illustrated and the illustrators have put a great deal of effort in with
the author to produce a view of Yelmalian society which feels very Ancient
Greek.

Secondly this is a real gamers pack. With this you get a good chunk of
history, places, people and adventures to create a bunch of Yelmalio and
start adventuring in Prax. Written by Mike O'Brien, a RQ afficionado of
some standing, it drips with both love of Glorantha and practical
role-playing. I picked this up and started playing it two weeks later.

The four scenarios are varied, one set in Garhound in Pavis County, and
suitable for involvement in or adventures around the annual Garhound
Contest. This Contest can be quite fun, although actually competing all
the events can be a little tiring on the players as well as the ref and
the characters! The next, a little jaunt against Chaos, is tough and
certainly scared my nearly-RuneLord group, but could be run quite well by
characters more cautious or numerous. It is a good scenario and well
crafted to the world.

The last two scenarios, which I didn't run and won't name, were good
although the latter one seems a little skeletal. What made the scenario
section really stand out for me was the notes M O'B did on how to start
characters off in Sun County, how differing cultural backgrounds might be
hooked into the scenarios and explaining how the pre-rolled characters he
thoughtfully provided would view matters. This is the sign of a referee's
referee, someone who has not only been there, but is willing to share it.

Ken Rolston, he of Stormbringer, Paranoia etc fame is now RQ editor for
Avalon Hill and this is an excellent debut for his talents. Without taking
anything from Mike O'Brien this product was doubled in value by the
production values lavished on it. It is a superb introduction to Prax and
following it I hope to see River of Cradles in the shops by Christmas, you
hear me guys?

PS: For those of you still playing RQ2, this is an essential purchase, you
will find the detail, history and adventuring ideas further develop your
Praxian campaigns. Some stuff isn't new, but enough is for this to be worth
your while.
