There is the Silmarillion parallel in the KoS description of Argrath's LBQ (p.33): "but the love which his wife sent to him in a feather". Compare Earendil's westfaring in the Silmarillion:
"...Elwing with the Silmaril upon her breast had cast herself into the sea.
...Ulmo bore up Elwing out of the waves, and he gave her the likeness of a great white bird, and upon her breast there shone as a star the Silmaril, as she flew over the waters to seek Earendil her beloved. On a time of night Earendil at the helm of his ship saw her come towards him..." and she fell down (still in bird shape) and was caught by the mariner. Who was astonished to find his love in his boat the next morning, and penetrated the mists of lost Brithos^H^H^H^H^H^H^HWesternesse after he had already given up all hope.
