Robert forgets that the gods have legions of spirits who, having dedicated their mortal lives to a god's service, spend eternity roaming the spirit plane doing their god's bidding. IMO those spirits who can remember a language would be especially useful to a god as they can sneak up and listen to the conversations of passers by....
Remember also that most Priests have allied spirits which are in a permanent Mindlink. These spirits may also communicate (Mindlink again?) with their god on a regular basis. Woe betide the Priest who lies to his god while his ally is listening. Of course, particularly corrupt Priests may be able to corrupt their ally....
