First, since I also dislike the Egyptian association (Esrolians DO have mummies, but only certain folks are mummified - and it aint a blessing) I always refer to the Pharao as 'the GodKing' IMG.
I'm really interested in this guy. He did in some way 'best' each of
the lands of the Holy Country (another name which gives totally wrong
associations for me, so I call the place Maniria - short for Holy
Alliance of Maniria - compare to how in the RW 'America' often really
mean the US of A) and I've heard three of them:
1. He beats up/kills the OOO and thus gains power over the trolls of
Shadowland. He _COULD_ perhaps have become the new OOO in this way,
but chooses not to, just as the trolls do as he says.
2. He becomes the Year Son of Esrolia but tricks the priestesses by
reincarnating, so he remains King of Esrolia forever - but lets the
High Queen and the earth cults retain most of their power, just like
the trolls.
3. He wins such an incredible amount of money at Casino Island that
it would have basically gone totally broke, unless he instead had
stipulated he would get a sum each year - and gets overlordship over
the God Forgot Islands until the dept is paid. (Master of _Luck_ and
Death? Asrelia holds secrets of Luck - Belintar could have gained
these in Esrolia or the Shadowlands)
That gives a pattern. Now, how did he get similar power over Heortland, Caladraland and the Rightarm Islands? Is there anything said about this in say RQ Companion? And in which order did these thing happen? I like the idea that every 'besting' gave him things he needed for the next one. Anyone who has a clue, or an idea?
Furthermore, is there any culture in Glorantha who has a Trickster The Bad Rebel? You know, where most of the stories are about how he tries to become ruler instead of the great benevolent God of Ruling, but always fails because he is such a selfish, foolish bastard, and Real Kings are generous, wise and true? (Now I suddenly got images of Pinky and the Brain trying to take over the world each night, but that was not entirely my meaning...)
