Probably the real reason. But the nasty troll can always just pile up the gold into a big pile in the middle of a troll land, and lurk nearby with his buddies. Sooner or later the local solars will flock in, and dinner is delivered.
And the super-wily troll knows that, by devouring massive amounts of gold (say, a few dozen tons or so) the Solar mode of coinage will be destabilized by scarcity. Ha!
