While I wouldn't go so far as to say one needs an excuse _not_ to join, if you're looking for a psychological imperative to do so, one might also favourably compare it to the cost of getting satisfactorily pissed at the next (or the previous) Convulsion, among many other such notionally Glorantha-dependant activities...

Of course, the 150-odd Observers will still be able to get the same Mundane benefits (assuming they come into being), but will they be able to correctly perceive the Mysteries?
