Only in ye olde Cultes of Praxe, and one gets the impression that was to provide fighting skills for their rune lords. They are not taught any weapon skills in the RoC cult writeup (which also dispenses with the rune lords). When it comes to fighting, Lhankor Mhyites have enough learning to know it's Storm Bull or Orlanth's job. They generally deal with their foes by a riddling contest (cf the defeat of Grandbread in KoDP).
If you want a heroic Lhankor Mhy sage who doesn't delve over scrolls, then place a lawspeaker charged with remembering the decisions of tribe, clan, whatever and gets leaned on/given gifts daily by people seeking the fruits of his wisdom.
