By designing separate rules for the physical stats of heroes (ie Life Points, Armour Values etc. : whether inspired by Pendragon, RQ, or whichever gritty system you prefer), to use as soon as APs go below 0. You can then have heroic characters who have many powerful skills and magics (ie APs) setting them apart from the common herd, but who are nevertheless low, fleshly creatures once they run out of Mojo, and liable to have their legs chopped off, and ... well ; the rest is up to you ...
