Pavis taken literally

It suddenly occurred to me today: the word "pavis" means something. It refers to a shield that can be hand-carried, then placed on the ground to provide passive defense, often for archers.

So if the EWF hero was a "pavis" made by the Aldryami, what was he meant to protect the Wood against, anyway? Some threat from the Sea? - --
