If you want to try *really* turgid academic prose on comparative mythology,
try Campbell's
"creative mythology". I've tried to read it twice, and other than a
confused impression that
the writing of James Joyce was considerably more important that Jesus
Christ, I didn't
take anything away from it. The first volume of the series ("primitive
mythology" I think)
is however good.
