If you want to acquire the same gifts and powers as your god then you must
adhere to the myths.
If you are willing to take risks then you can try for other powers as well.
Certainly some herowuesters come out ahead of the game and get somethign
better, but there is always a cost and the Law of Unintended Consequences
is always likely to be invoked.

This is precisely what the Hero Wars is about.
As Peter M said:
"Better"? Perhaps, but IMHO it is better to describe the results as
"different." New benefits will be gained, but others will be lost. The
altered myth will have its own set of drawbacks. The results might be more
useful or more relevant to the PC's than the original, of course.
