Maintainer: Henk.Langeveld@Sun.COM --------------------- From: peterm3010@aol.com Subject: thoughts on Yinkin & some knowledge god subcults Message-ID: <9305042131.tn11828@aol.com> Date: 5 May 93 01:31:28 GMT The ideas expressed hereafter were developed prior to KoS and the Elmal revelation. I'm sending this in unchanged just because I have not had the time to consider all the ramifications right now. My desire is to share some thoughts on how I run Glorantha, and to add to the variety of ways people can make Glorantha their own. Quite some time ago someone asked about the Orlanthi subcult of Yinkin. Personally, I feel the Yinkin spell _Identify Scent_ is better suited to the Brother Dog cult of Balazar. In my campaign, I give the spell _Catseye_ to Yinkin (and so to Wind Lords), and give Yelmalio a new runespell of _Brighteye_ instead. _Brighteye_ is much like _Catseye_, except the target can see in total darkness and his or her eyes glow with an inner yellow light for the duration of the spell. I think this better fits Yelmalio's role as the god of "Last Light." After all, how could he survive the Greater Darkness if his magic requires his father's presence? I think this change also gives a better feel for why Orlanth was not hindered by the Darkness, and adds to why he was so willing to go on the Lightbringer's Quest. On another subject, I have long felt that subcults and associated cults were a somewhat neglected part of the write-ups concerning the major Gloranthan cults. Here are a few suggestions for expanding the cults of Lhankor Mhy and Irrippi Ontor. -------------------------------------------------------- Pimdir - Lhankor Mhy subcult A rival scholar of Dilfar's during the Dawn Ages, Pimdir sought to do with magic what Dilfar did with skill. He did not succeed. He did, however, discover the spirit magic spell Treasureclean. His cult has remained small for two reasons. One reason is that the effects of the spell can be duplicated, without magic with a little skill, time, and effort. The other reason is that the worship of Dilfar and Pimdir are mutually exclusive; a person who has worshipped at one subcult will not be accepted for worship at the other. Pimdir's major centers of worship are in his native city of Monros in the Holy Country, and in the Knowledge Temple in Pavis. There, this subcult is well patronized by explorers bringing treasure from the Big Rubble, and by the Lunar Army troops prior to inspections. There are rumours that the Lunar Cult of Irrippi Ontor is looking for a way to incorporate Dil far's worship into _their_ temple, but have yet to send representatives to Monros. Treas ureclean / Variable, Touch, Instant This spell will instantly remove any dirt, tarnish, etc... from one single piece of metal or gemstone, showing the item to maximum effect. It has the effect of a good cleaning and polishing, and will not repair cracks, dents, or gouges. Each Encumberance Point of the item (or fraction thereof) requires the use of one point of this spell. It is most used on jewelry, armor (usually plate, _never_ chainmail), and bladed weapons. -------------------------------------------- ------------ Veratus - Lhankor Mhy associated cult Veratus is a child of the great light spirit Lux, and is the Solar Archangel Guardian of the Holy Word of Truth. During the Great Darkness, the Chaos god Tien bound but could not break this god. Tien used Veratus to lure Lhankor Mhy, who was searching for his beloved Mistress of the Light of Knowledge, into a trap. In escaping from the trap, Lhankor Mhy freed Veratus and taught him knowledge useful against Tien's powers. Veratus recognized the Light of Truth in the Sage Lord and blessed him, exchanging oaths of support and friendship. Veratus is worshipped as an associated cult in the rare Lhankor-Mhy libraries of Lower Peloria (Tarsh, Holay, Imther, and Vanch). With the coming of the Lunar Empire, these temples are even rarer now. There is also a small center of worship in the famous Library of Ketheala. Sage Priests of Lhankor Mhy who agree to accept the geases of never knowingly write a falsehood, always challenge a Than/Thanatar worshipper, and never love any but Sky cult worshippers may learn Veratus' divine magic spell Detect Wr itten Lie. Sages who break a geas are visited by the Lhankor Mhy cult spirit of retribution. Veratus is worshipped in in his own right in the Dayzatar libraries of the Dara Happan Empire. Detect Written Lie /1 point/ Self, Temporal, Stackable, Reusable This spell allows for the successful reader of written material to detect written untruths. If the writer of the material wrote something which he or she knew to be false, then the letters which tell the untruth will seem to glow black when the spell caster reads them. The spell will only detect untruths as quickly as the reader reads and comprehends. The spell cannot detect falsehoods the writer believed to be true, or omissions of truth. Each additional point doubles the duration of the spell. ------------------------------------------ --------------Bik - Irrippi Ontor subcult A follower of both Irrippi Ontor and the Seven Mothers, Bik was a minor scribe who had a most unfortunate accident involving his quill while copying a magical Jrusteli text. He successfully managed to return from the Heroplane with a unique spirit magic spell, and achieved minor Heroic status as the Patron of Copiers. His subcult teaches the spirit magic spell of Quillfill. Any Irrippi Ontor temple where texts are copied will have a shrine, as will most Seven Mothers temples where translated texts are copied. The Lhankor Mhy temple in Nochet is known to b e attempting to learn the secrets of this subcult without compromising the temple itself. Quillfill / 1 Point, Touch, Temporal, Passive This spell allows a writing utensil which uses ink to magically not run dry during the spell duration. Wet ink must be on the utensil prior to the spell being cast, or else the spell has no effect. In addition, the ink drys instantly once off the utensil and will not drip, run, or smear. (The spell is actually misnamed, as it is the ink which is enchanted and not the writing utensil. Most worshippers of the subcult are aware of this.) -------------------------------------------------------- - Peter Michaels --------------------- From: Robert_J._Prior@nynet.nybe.north-york.on.ca Subject: Runequest Query Message-ID: <1993May04.151645.184212@nynet.nybe.north-york.on.ca> Date: 4 May 93 11:16:45 GMT This is basically a test of my Internet access.
