I'm about to start a game in Yuthippa. I could _desperately_ use _any_ info about
the Empire. The PCs are to head south to their new domain (err, and into exile)
north of Duke Raus's domain.

Anybody got a good map, cultural tidbit, cult write-up, anything?

I've got the Seven Mothers discussion from the Digest a couple of months back.
I'm looking for anything else - Any blind assertations you want to make Nick?

This brings up a point related to my begging for Lunar info, above.

In the tradition of a friend of mine starting a game set in Tekumel with
a dinner (for the players, not the characters) in Tekumelyani style, I was
planning on trying a similar dinner with Lunar food and drink to kick off
my new campaign. ( Maybe we'll try to eat Praxian later - YUCK! )

Anyone have any ideas what they eat, aside from Fronelan Barley? I was planning
on some sort of quasi-mediterranean meal (more North African and Turkish, than
Italian), but would love any additional suggestions.

Greg Fried here again.

Thanks to all for the feedback on Sun cults. I'll post my new Sun god at the
end of this posting. But first some responses to....

Rich Fenner, c/o Neil Robinson:
Yes, indeed, I am the author of the Uralog cult. It was my impression from
"Cults of Terror" page 91, that the rune that looks like the Fertility rune
on its side with a vertical line through its node is the Undead rune (ie, it
is Life + Death runes combined). I've noticed in the sorcery discussions
that people refer to a 'Hunger' rune. I had no idea what that meant until
now.But where do you get this from?
--------------------
Rob Mace:
Do please send me your article on Elmal/Yelmalio. I know nothing about
Elmal. (Is there a god Yio too?!)
Good points on divine identities. But I wonder about that idea that
monotheism might mean that all gods are aspects of one god. Which one? Are
they all aspects of the goddess Glorantha? (Hmmm. I like it. Chaos gods
would then be alien to this refracted identity of Glorantha -- fracturing
it.) On RL Earth, Gandhi was perhaps one of the main proponents of the all
gods/one god brand of monotheism. His Hindu monotheistic/polytheism did not
convince the Muslims of India though, and it was a more orthodox monotheist
who killed him. It's a dangerous line to take. You risk offending some
sects sense of uniqueness and distinction.
--------------------
Joerg:
I meant the system to limit learning, but if you really want to be mean, I
suppose you could use it for casting, too.
--------------------
Steve G:
Thanks for that thought on Ginna Jar; note the Associated Cults at the end of
my write up!

Now, this is the cult. Lemme know what you all think!

YALEM
Moonsson; Sunsson

I. MYTHOS AND HISTORY

Yalem is the child of the White Moon and the Sun, who together conceived the child in the SunUs prison in Hell. For the sake of the cosmos, the Sun, Yelm, undertook a great vow: to stay in Hell, not as a prisoner, but as a free and living god, there to remain in contemplation until the end of Time. Yalem was born soon before the end of the Mythtime. Yelm charged Orlanth, to atone for his past deeds, to guide the child safely out of Hell. Thus, Orlanth and his companions brought young Yalem out through the perils of Hell, on through the depths of Ocean, out to the edge of the world, the Horizon, where Yalem climbed into the SunUs golden chariot and began the Dawning that initiated the Nowtime. Gentle Dawn proceeded him, bearing welcome word of YalemUs coming to the world. The light of the Blue Moon, YalemUs motherUs sister, was scattered across the Sky as the bright new god first rose. Rainbow, the god of joy and peace, cast a many colored arch of triumph for the god, !
as Storm and Darkness relented. T
he dawn of Yalem brought hope and order to the cosmos, as the sealing of the Cosmic Compromise and the beginning of Time.

YalemUs runes are: Life, Sun, Death and Harmony.

II. CULT ECOLOGY

Yalem is the god of the Sun that rises and sets each day, embodying both the lost presence of his father and the cyclical nature of his mother. He is the inception of Time and the seal of the Great Compromise. He is the enemy of all hubris, both mortal and divine; he cleaves to boundary, measure, rhythm and limit. Each day, he makes his circuit of the cosmos, paying respects to and receiving respect from all the gods who placed their oath in the cosmic compromise.

The cult celebrates its holy days on Fireday of each week. Seasonal holy days fall on Death Week in Storm and Darkness Seasons, on Fertility Week in Earth and Sea Season, and Truth Week in Fire Season. The high holy ritual takes place throughout the Sacred Time, when the Great Compromise is reaffirmed.

The cult uses both scimitar and spear.

III. THE CULT IN THE WORLD

Yalem represents the return of balance and order to the world. As the seal of the Great Compromise, he enjoys at least grudging courtesy from most gods and cults. His worshipers abjure the rigid and paternalistic hierarchy of many solar cults, but nor does Yalem smile upon wanton, Stormish recklessness either. Because of his nightly passage through Hell, Yalem can even suppress the customary solar hatred for Darkness. His cult emphasizes that all the gods who swore to the Great Compromise are needed for the weave of the cosmic fabric; he is the guardian of the integrity of Glorantha, and his cult attempts to replicate his firm tolerance.

If the Red Goddess could manage to seduce Yalem into her fold, the implications would be enormous.

Yalem is the god of cosmopolitan artists, aristocrats, courtiers and diplomats. His worship is often practiced by the citizens of independent city-states, similar to those of EarthUs Ancient Greece, especially Athens (think of Apollo and Athena rolled in one).

IV. INITIATES, ACOLYTES, RUNE LORDS

Standard as per RQ3, with local variations. Skills to be checked for should include spear and/or scimitar, Communications skills (especially Orate and Diplomacy (see below)), Lores, refined skills in the arts (e.g., lyre, not drums!).

The cult teaches most spirit magic and does not forbid darkness spells.

Special Cult Skill: Diplomacy. This Communications skill is a semi-mystical ability, akin to the Storm BullUs Sense Chaos or HumaktUs Sense Assassin. Success with the skill indicates that a taboo is about to be broken, that some ceremonial nicety is required, etc.

V. RUNE PRIESTHOOD

Once again, standard requirements.
All common divine magic, plus Sunspear, Resurrect, Cloud Clear, Shield, Command Salamander, plus the special cult spell, Peace.

Peace. 1 point. This spell functions like the City Gods spell City Harmony, detailed in the Cults Book, except that it works anywhere in Glorantha.

VI. ASSOCIATED CULTS

One of the great strengths of Yalem is the honor he receives from the gods of the cosmos. This translates into his cultUs receiving many spells from associated deities. Each campaign should adjudicate this at its discretion, depending on how it interprets the god. A sample from one locale of worship might be:

The White Moon provides Reflection.
Yelm provides Sunripen.
Lathario, the charioteer of the Sun Chariot, provides Lightspeed (= MastakosU Teleportation).
Ginna Jar, mysterious goddess, otherwise unaccessible, provides Tread Lightly (1 point. Allows the cultist to proceed unmolested through realms normally hostile to Light.)
Orlanth provides Decrease Wind.
Issaries provides Path Watch.
Lankhor Mhy provides Knowledge.
Kygor Litor (!) provides Counterchaos.
etc.

I'm willing to make every single bit of electronic RuneQuest or
Gloranthan Lore available off of the FTP site at soda. If you have
something that isn't there right now either (1) mail it to me (2) let
me know where to get it -or- (3) upload it to /pub/runequest/upload on
soda, and drop me a line. I'll be happy to put it in the FTP area.

The only caveat is that I won't make things which violate copyright
law available. Doing such would be both legally and morally
reprehensible. If you'd like to make something available that
includes some Chaosium text, call or write them. They're reasonable
people.

re Joerg Baumgartner (Extension)
The problem with letting spells run on a long time is that, while some spells
are relatively harmless w/long duration (or in fact cry out for long
durations), other spells become unreasonably effective [compare a spell used
to disguise a person may need to endure for hours for use to be made of it;
whereas a few minutes will encompass the successful use of a combat spell such
as shield. The problem is the one-size-fits-all spell descriptions.

Thom Baguley suggests that
>Atheistic sorcerers are going to have a very hard time of it in Glorantha ...

I suppose one could say that the atheistic Brithini *do* have a hard time of
it, what with all those ignorant half-men out there worshipping depraved &
obsessive sorcerers (Worlath, Humct, Ehilm & the like).

Cynics might wonder how many of the Malkioni wizards - for all that they act
in a role similar to that of the Roman Catholic clergy - actually *believe*
all the Invisible God blather that keeps the peasants happy. After all they
don't have the tangible benefits that the barbarians get from worship.

		*		*		*

Neil Robinson asks about >100% skills in RQ2
I would assume that the investment as a Knight (either by birth in the
Brithini, at the coming of age amongst the Rokari, or by merit amongst the
Hrestoli) would be equivalent to the investment as RuneLord in the barbarian
cultures. I tinkered one time with the concept of stealing from Stormbringer,
and making the ceremony involve the questioning of an appropriate virtue
(presumably a virtue of attack or of defense) as part of the Western culture.

In fact Stormbringer makes a useful source of such ideas, provided one firmly
filters out the grossities.

Tom Zunder wonders about Yelm & Ernalda; but doesn't seem to have noticed the
typical incestuous relationships all over the known family trees (where
Glorantha does indeed borrow from the real-world in its myth making)

G'day MOB here,

I've been having a bit of a problem with my e-mail lately: some
messages to me have not been getting through. I make it a point
to *always* reply to my mail, so if anyone out there has mailed me
in the last two months and not got a reply, it's because I haven't
received it!

Does anyone know why this might be happening? I suspect it may only be a
problem with America On Line, but I'm not sure yet.

If you have mailed me recently and not got a reply, could you
please send a message to Tim Leask and he'll let me know. Tim's
address:

"tsl@mulga.cs.mu.OZ.AU"

Thanks

Copyright exisits for a very good reason, and infringing copyright is a
serious offense, whether you're doing it "for the good of glorantha (sic)
and RQ" or whatever. If everyone went round ripping off everyone else's
material there'd be no Chaosium for you to tell to "sod off". This is
obviously the work of a Gbaji Illuminate who believes that the end
justifies the means. I hope Chaosium sue the pants off you.
