My own system, devised to try out the HW extended contest table basically swapped the initial AP for the initial number of troops; so a unit of 10 against an army of 1000 would have 1AP vs 100AP. Each unit had a combat skill, and the commander was able to augment that skill with his tactical ability/leadership. The player then described the actions taken "a mad headlong rush at the enemy yelling profanities" or "a few skirmishers will cautiously approach and attempt to pick of stragglers with slingshot". Negative AP losses would result in troops being lost, being routed etc. It worked quite well (ie it was quick, exciting, descriptive) with only magic rules and sieges not being quite right. That said, it wasn't supposed to be too strategic, and wasn't.
