I was under the impression that, over the last five years or so,
Greg had moved away from a theory that initiation was into a specific
dieties mysteries towards a theory that the initiation that happened
on reaching adulthood was often into a cultures pantheon, with
further initiation to a particular diety being something that
happened afterwards for some people. The nature of *often* being
debateable.
Perhaps the lay status is a reflection of this cultural pantheonistic
initiation?
