I agree. Again, we boil down to context eg.

Scenario 1

Player is chatting to friends, door bursts open and berserk troll charges across the room roaring with axe held over head. Chance of player using Witty Repartee = 0.

Why? He has no time, the troll is too loud, he is unable to form a put down that would work PERIOD before the axe will hit him. I'd give minuses to his close comabt or dodge in this situation, never mind his Wit. There is simply no way he could stop the troll with words at this point.

Scenario 2

Player is charged by troll, flies up to the ceiling way from him and lets him swing for a few seconds _then_ tries to put him down. Chance of success = his berserk vs player Wit in extended contest with a -5 due to the trolls current anger which lowers his chance of listening.

Scenario 3

Player encounters ZZ trolls in alley, one pushed him, he uses his wit _to attempt to shame him in front of the other trolls and disarm the situation_ and the player quite clearly tells me this. Chance of succes = extended contest, no minus. If he loses all the trolls are enraged and attack, if he succeeds, then they all guffaw at the unfortuate troll who sheepishly bows to social pressure. If its a close one, he has time to leg it while they ponder his long words.

Context, context, context. The GM is the judge of this. If a player has the temerity to bitch about the GM decision, then let him try the witty repartee appraoch against Berserk GMing. My skill in that 12w5. Good luck pal.

Martin
