Yes, but that doesn't change anything in Simple Contests - and while I haven't done the math (very ugly for Extended Contests, if you're going to compare every possible bid...), I would be astonished if the problem didn't vastly outweigh the extra AP.

That helps, but not enough. For example, what if I have to climb something, and you're going to let me default to my Strong ability at - -3. Now, let's say that I have Strong 4w and the climb has a resistance of 5w2 - I'd be considerably better off if you let me have a -4 improvisation penalty than only -3. :-)

In short - your idea is a good one, but it doesn't really solve the problem if there are a lot of improvised abilities being used. (Of course, one could extend the principle easily enough: if you end up rolling against 1w, you can roll against 20 instead). - --
