I think its better to regard it as an amusing challenge than as "hard work" - personally I think its more fun than Yet Another Cattle Raid Scenario (TM). Or to put it another way, when running out of ideas to make your cattle raid scenarios interesting start going over all those useless abilities the heroes have and see if that gives you any inspiration.
