In this case I think its a case of a counter-intuitive use of the system rather than the system itself.

If the archers are fighting as a coherent unit then they should be lumped together as a unit. If they are skirmishing as individuals then run them as individuals and allow for individual consequences.

The problem here seems to be running them as individuals then trying to explain the outcome in terms of their being in formation as a unit. The easiest explanation would usually be that one particular archer got too far out on a limb and got jumped on the flank even though their opponents all got pin-cushioned in the end. Or the archer just got the luckiest/toughest person charging at them - even at Crecy a few Frenchmen made it to the English lines.

Of course if the opponents were not trying to close the range then the archer would be unhurt anyway, possibly embarrased but not run through with a sharp lump of bronze.
