You can't, as far as I can tell (but then, I don't think characters can raise their keywords either). But you get 3 other abilities for the follower - make sure one of those is important.

Yep! That's the way I view it. And the rules for non-human sidekicks are good too. (Instead of a keyword, they get their species collection of ablities (not exactly a "keyword" as such) as per Anaxial's or the creature chapter.

Yes, retainers are handled as a group (which is good for getting support) but sidekicks, allies, etc, are all handled separately. But then I often give hp for improving such - especially if a hero has risked life and limb to save the butt of some retainer.
