How 'bout this? (Warning--I don't have my rulebooks with me).
The spell/field absorbs a certain number of "wounds"/"hurts". If the shielded character takes a wound, he's unhurt but the shield's strength goes down by one.
In addition--if the player loses a roll and is supposed to lose more than 7 AP, let *him* have the option of taking a wound (which would be blocked by the shield) instead of losing the APs. (Ordinarily, it's the winner's option.) This represents the shielded player deliberately choosing to take a blow on the magic shield, rather than lose initiative.
This would give the shielded player a certain edge, since he could fight more aggressively (counting on the shield to protect him from a few bad rolls), but not an invincible one (since if he gets knocked down to 0 APs, he's still lost--his enemy can then keep sawing away at the shield until he gets through.)
What do folks think?
