The smashing of shields was IMO just a matter of choreography, since the other guy had as many shields as he wanted he did not incur in any penalty.

I think it runs pretty straightforward in HW. Off the top of my head (and IIRC the duel): the big guy scores many successes against the other guy but doesn't takes his AP down enough because he is betting low (and the GM describes the losing of APs as smashed shields and fatigue) then in the last round the other guy takes an unrelated action to "feign close to defeat" gaining an edge in the following exchange (surprise). In the last exchange the big guy is confident enough to try a all-out attack (bets all his AP) but the other guy wins (a big enough victory, I'd say) both the exchange and the contest, while the big guy is down to -31 APs (or is -41?) and so is dead.

I'd say that in the last exchange the other guy's rolls was not a critical because IIRC correctly he was quite tired so he'd have not recovered the APs. OTOH you could assume that his increased AP total was reflected by the esteem he gained with that victory.

Too bad for you! The bear-men had a trollish feel, and the warriors' leader's death was very cool. Was the 13th warrior a Lunar? :)

I would treat it as an unrelated action, assigning a resistance to the shield (probably based on RQ's AP). Then:

Marginal Victory: you foe cannot use his weapon for 1 round
Minor Victory: you damage your foe's weapon and it is now used with a -1
penalty
Major Victory: you severely damage your foe's weapon and it is now used at
half ability
Complete victory: you completely destroy your foe's weapon

The weapon can be repaired as per normal healing rules, using appropriate
abilities and/or magic.

Not in my draft (which doesn't mean much, unfortunately).

	Cheers
	A choreographing Alex.
