How about a two for one exchange rate (that is two +1 Feat points for one HP to spend on the Ability that drives them). That would make it inefficient, but allow for the player to incrementally grow and get the benefits of the Feats in the meanwhile if they prefered. I think that allows for the nifty incrmental growth idea, while also making it viable to just go for the normal growth method.
