I don't know what the final book will end up officially saying, but in my games the ritual that invests you as clan chief starts you on the path of Orlanth Rex.

In other words, you have to be clan chief.

I would allow you to collapse your trade activities into your royal activities. After all, if you're an Issaries devotee who was elected king, you've probably been chosen because your tribe wants to improve its trade status.

Likewise for the Elmali king chosen for his abilities to defend the tribe, the Humakti chosen to bring death to the tribe's enemies, etc.
