HeroQuest isn't designed with this assumption. It's designers wrote a game to model what happens in narative fantasy fiction, myth and fable. To understand how HeroQuest is intended to work, you need to understand the conventions of the narative genre(s) on which it builds, not reality.

Cast your mind back a few thousand years (or even just a few hundred, or depending where you are in the world, not at all). People's understanding of what is real was quite different from yours and mine. It was very much based on narative interpretation of the environment. Entire world views were, and indeed still are, based on narative interpretations of the world, most commonly through religion. Many religious people will tell you that the narative contained in their mythologies tell you everything you need to know about the world. Where the world comes from, why it is the way it is, the difference between right and wrong, why it hurts when you touch fire, etc, etc. HeroQuest is about living those naratives through the characters in our games.
