Well, I hope they all felt just *awful* when their matriarch got defeated. Lots of guilt to hand around there! This is actually a good instance of the difference between having social support and not (a "learning experience" for the players). If they had backed their buddy (biddy?), she probably wouldn't have been defeated quite so badly, and might even have won!

I don't think you *did* railroad them, since the party decided not to back up their champion. I don't know how many players you had or what the final effect might have been if they had backed her up, but "taking a step back" when the other matriarch whistled up her family was cowardly of the entire group. They had a (unspoken) obligation to back her up. No wonder the player lost - she didn't have *any* support from the people closest to her!
