You have a point.

Consider this. Only players pay HP for abilities, right? If a player thinks that a certain mundane defense should apply to an attack, then allow it to do so. Use improv mods if you think appropriate.

When a player's hero uses magic, use only magical defenses for the opponents (or the 14 if none present themselves). Means less thinking for the narrator, and the player is still incentivized to take magic.

Of course, as narrator, you'll give the narrator characters magic abilities as is appropriate since you don't use HP. Make sense?
