Variable augments are rare in the group, but I have used the tactic, and intend to use it more.
As Ashley Munday observed, it's a good tactic for a player in a group of more powerful "ability monsters". It provides a way for a less powerful character to have a bigger impact on the outcome than just giving his automatic augment to one of the "monsters".
Moreover, the tactic becomes increasingly useful as a character improves. A character with an ability of 14 seeking a +2 augment has to beat a 10 resistance, and has only a 50% chance of any victory. In contrast, a character with an ability of 4W2 seeking a +5 augment has to beat only a 5W resistance, and so has almost of 75% chance of any victory.
