Fixed-length extended contests?

Say you want an extended contest to run for a predetermined number of rounds, for in game reasons (e.g. series of interrelated contests at a fair), or that you want to end it for out of game reasons (e.g. it is fizzling and grinding you all down), how do you do it?

I'm assuming you have discarded a series of simple contests here.

If someone goes out of the contest early, you could usually find an explanation (broken leg / caught cheating, can no longer participate), but this could be unhelpful if you still have potentially fun stuff to do (say the rest of the contests at the fair).

If by the end everyone still has positive AP but you have outrun the story (say you have a structured trollball game) or it is fizzling, you could (a) insist on larger bids to get you there, or (b) tot up the final AP. These might (a) not get you there or (b) be anticlimactic, however.

So has someone come up with a clever mechanistic way to preset the length (which could in itself be a fun in-game spur to action - time is running out and you're 10 points / two severed limbs behind)?

Sam.

p.s. Apologies if this has already been discussed.
