I think there are two questions here.
Yes, the changes make a difference. Pretty substantial in some ways, though they seem subtle. Meaning that the game plays somewhat differently between versions.
But, no, the changes don't make the old reference material unusable. You have to do some slight adjustments here and there, but there are notes for how to do this on the support page. Even though I'm not a huge Glorantha fan, I find that the HW materials are chock full of the stuff that propells play. So I'd recommend picking them up if you are, in fact, intent on playing in Glorantha.
