Thanks for all the replies.

I have no intention of making my character a duellist nor do I imagine that having to fight an actual duel is likely to come up (I hope). But you've helped me resolve most of my doubts and I hadn't thought about how Dueling would match up against a melee combat skill. I'll need to check with my GM about how capable of self defense he will be if his retinue is, say, attacked by bandits.
