Do you use the +20 modifier for inherently difficult magic (HQ p101) or the distance modifiers (HQ p100)?

You could use the exertion modifiers on HQ p77. Using magic constantly for an hour takes him down by -10 which should put a crimp in his speedy gonzales act.
