Remember that the rule: one try for each contest is useful (i.e. no multiple picks of the same lock). Apply it to the ghosts: If a ghost tries to turn a hero in a rock lizard and the hero successfully resists it with a major or complete victory (via deity protection or strong will or whatever), then probably the ghost is no more a threat for him/her. No need to destroy the ghost anymore.
