So far as I can see, the exchange is just that, an exchenge of blows, not one attack and one defence Both are using their skills, the split into 'actor' and 'opponent' (note: not 'attacker' and 'defender') is just a game mechanic to simplify things. If the opponent chose to defend with 'Dodge' or something, he would not get the effect of his weapon Rank. Using 'Spear and Shield' means he's actively trying to get his spear in the way of doggie-boy's attack (a perfectly good tactic). If the doggie-boy loses, and has bid high, he's run onto the spear, or had to energetically avoid doing so.

This is why use of weapon and armour Ranks is vital to any sense of realism to me, otherwise why would anyone use weapons or wear armour? Without Ranks, getting hit by a fist is just as damaging as getting hit by a Poleax, whether you are wearing rags or iron plate!
