I would extend this to say I would not tend to use a simple contest where I felt we were going for 'resolution' of part of the story. Asa corollary the beauty of a simple contest can be that it creates the possibility of reversal through defeat without the likelihood of bringing events to an early conclusion. So when the villains henchman assault the heroes down a dark alley it is a simple contest, even early meetings with the villain himself, only the 'big finish' gets the extended contest.
Think of a Bond movie. Most of it is simple contests up until the extended contest in the villains layer at the end.
