You can also use them as a Talisman to the writer's node (ie, you can use it to cast any spell in the book).

Think of all those scenes in the musty church basement with huge books chained to lecterns. These usually aren't the type of thing to lug around the countryside, you keep them in a safe place in the Monastary scriptorium of the wizard's laboratory. Think wooden (or metal, or wood covered with the living skin of a virgin) covers, thick vellum (or stone, or thin silver) pages, gold and jewel embellishments on the cover (or a demon's face screaming in eternal agony), etc.
