In such a case, the god would confer charms and the like without the worshipper becoming like the god.

This would mean that the Telmori and other Hsunchen are not animists, which doesn't sound right to me to say the very least.

Part of the problem is that the animism is something you have mantra ignores the spirit possession aspect of animism in general. IMO it's something not essential when playing a Praxian or a Grazer (the only example of possession in Cults of Prax was a Baboon) but will become necessary when playing a Hsunchen (the Telmori don't really count since they turn into wolves whether they want to or not).
