Low bids / truth in debates

I think the debate that's been going on over what is the mathematically safest strategy links to the other discussion of whether having evidence on your side is an advantage in debate.

None of us has yet quoted any actual evidence, only opinion. Alex appealed to a statement by Robin Laws, but when I spoke to him on the subject at the last Convulsion Robin said he was not a mathematician, but was only quoting the comments from the playtest groups.

What would be evidence? Detailed statistical calculations? Or should we all start quoting our professional qualifications (which usually seems to me bad manners in this sort of discussion)?

Andrew
