I've tried melee, both in re-enactment with steel blades and a script (nothing fancy, just 'you lot win, you lot lose, he has to survive'), and Live Role Playing with rubber swords (300-a-side open field combat, and 300-a-side woodland clearing skirmishing...). It is easy to see the ones who gain AP, they start screaming and yelling when they realise they're winning... There's a definite enthusiasm generated by realising you are as good as you think you are :)
