It has many properties in common with elements, and in fact it may be an element, but it isn't one of the five true elements that the world is made of, and so is an abomination!
Alternatively:
It's a big ball of earth, it's red and glows, it's trying (with difficulty) to rise up into the sky, it's just a weird fusion of earth and fire, that can't decide which to be, and has gone mad trying to be both.
