There is no strict correlation when distance represents the goal, just 0 AP means you got there. An AP represents a variable, according to the distance to be travelled. 20 AP over 10 yards is about 2 AP a yard, 25 AP over 250 yards is 10 yards an AP. But even that isn't strict, as each exchange should represent some distinct action, the target running from tree to boulder to ditch for cover.

I have assumed that this represents 'lost' AP not used in the actual bid, where distance is not the goal. For example, if you are 12 yards away from an enemy and intend to hit him with a sword, you have to cross that 12 yards, but doing so is not part of your attack (OK, you could charge, but even so the distance is not the point of it, only the impact). Therefore you drop some AP in the running over. Don't use this if crossing the distance is the goal of the contest.

That's entirely up to you (as Narrator), same as in any game. And yes, the lack of comparative movement rates does make it difficult...
