If it's an extended contest with APs, then there *has* to be a resistance of some sort. Not rolling a defensive ability is not an option, even if the referee takes your most appropriate physical ability such as "tough" and rolls that for you. Even in a simple contest, there has to be an opposing ability. If it boils down to a simple ability test on behalf of the archer, then one hit will incapacitate you, and I don't think you want that.
