Very true. Absolutely the worst thing about any gaming fiction is when it tries to ensure that all the action "fits in the rules". (AD&D Novels are the worst. With a good GM I can happily play AD&D and just accept the limitations of the rules. When they are written into novels "Jack realised he had only one third level spell left that day..." it just becomes ridiculous).

I am a big fan of Oliver Dickinson's Griselda Stories, but is blindingly obvious which ones were written as stories, and which ones are write ups of scenarios, and the former are far better than the latter!
