The difference is that very few people are dangerous with a pistol at 100m whereas almost everybody is with a "musket" or other longarm at the same distance. That's why Wesley gave an effective range of 10m for a "Flintnail Pistol" & 50m for a "Flintnail musket". (YBoT #3 p. 69)

Nope, not necessarily: the caliber can very well be the same (9mm Para semi-automatic pistol vs. submachinegun). Assuming you are hit, it's probably better to be hit by a .22lr pistol than by a .44magnum "musket". (?!?)
