Just a sec. So she'd be better off using her Archery with the default -3 improvisational modifier than she would be using her straight skill? Or did her archery suddenly leap to 12 when she learnt Javelin?

Page 23. Paraphrased; there are two combat abilities, "Close Combat" and "Ranged Combat." You use an improvisational modifier unless you have specified a weapon or fighting style. So, there isn't a Javelin skill, or archery skill, per se. There is a ranged combat skill, and you have a list of weapons under it (Javelins & Bows) that you are proficient in.
