It really doesn't matter precisely for numbers. This was, afterall, an example to illustrate how to do combined magic. At the above level of skill, hurtling gouts of hail down poor fyrdlings is done the following example.... HOpefully this will illustrate things a little more clearly...

Gunnar Hurt With Hail 9w3 vs Fyrdlings Resist 13 (or 17).

One by one, he can smoke them pretty automatically as he gets at least
*two* mastery bumps, even when you take range into account (+5 to +10)

Of course, he could just try to hit 30 folks with magic (+30) which STILL gives him a mastery advantage (7w2 resistance)... And if its done as simple constests (its not something challenging) it results in
some very hurt cottars and carls.

This is why clans don't attack without doing their own preparations.

Or, of course, he could be busy fighting the Black Oak's perfidious Hedkoranth devotee and trying to block the incoming lighting (using some sort of protective Resist Lighting feat spread over his own folks.
