The way i've understood it, the carryover has two uses:

  1. it determines the overall results of the quest
  2. the accumulating carryover from the first steps of the quest gives a nice bonus to latter (and tougher) steps.

If you show courage etc. in the first steps, with the carryover you may beat an end-of-a-level monster that would otherwise be out of your range.

But I still don't understand how Rurik is supposed to win the quest challenge against 15w3 with 10w2 or whatever his Boast is? In the example, he doesn't use any of his ritual bonuses to augment the skill...
