I think this is possibly the right way to go (from a Roleplaying point of view) even if it does make things a bit more tricky (from a rules point of view). People will be buying and selling things for money (or bartering them for "Real" objects) rather than the rather abstract concept of "Wealth".

So when negotiating pay for a job, or roleplaying out the bargaining with merchants, one should talk in terms of Lunars, Wheels, Clacks (or even Bolg), and only convert it into "Wealth" if and when it becomes important later - (If no one is interested in cementing the newfound wealth from the adventure at the end then there is no need to worry about it).

So in HW terms it might not make any difference whether you get paid 100L or 150L per day for the expedition, or 5L or 7L per head bounty on the Trollkin, it's still only 1 wealth* at the end of the scenario (but of course you can improve your "bargain" as "used in the session").

Obviously if you want to skip over the provisioning to get on to some other part of the scenario, you can still just go straight to a simple Wealth contest.

*thinking about it, the Lunars income to Wealth increase probably ought to be some sort of non-linear scale. The amount of extra cash that will raise you from 2 - 3 wealth is not going to make an impact on the rating of a 5W Wealth Merchant...
