I do have a vision though of warriors who get too old for battle, becoming lawspeakers (they might well fit the role of a juror, in a Njal like capacity). They would retain some of their old knowledge, with their now lower close combat skills reflecting their advancing years. IMHO easiest to do with the 100 words method. Some might end up as Cadfeal like LMhy scholars.

As for the non-combat character, the best soloution in HW for combat abilities for non-combat heroes is usually followers. Give your sage two or three and he should be able to survive in a fight. Those sord sages of legend probably had weapon wielding followers, but they never get mentioned by the saga writers.

In addition the advantage of the Extended contest rules is that you don't need to have sword play for dice rolling drama.
